Moo loves: (Laura): Someone bought us this book when the kids were teeny and it ending up falling apart because we read it so much, it made us all roar with laughter.

From the publisher:

"The winner of the 2014 Association of Illustrators' Award for Children's Books, Shh! is the covetable new picture book from Chris Haughton, one of the most exciting new voices in children's literature.

From the multi award-winning author-illustrator comes a picture book about a beautiful bird, four friends and plans gone wrong...

The friends are out for a walk. Suddenly, they spot it – a beautiful bird perched high in a tree! They simply must have it and – shh!– they have a plan. So they tip-toe very slowly, nets poised – "Ready one... ready two... ready three... GO!" But, at the turn of the page, we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully oblivious bird, flying away.

One hilarious foiled plan after another and it's clear that this goofy gang cannot catch that elusive birdie! But the littlest of this group, a quiet spectator up until now, knows that a bit of kindness can go a long way... Will his friends follow his gentle lead or will they get themselves into even more trouble?"

Also available and also hilarious: Oh No, George!, A Bit Lost and Goodnight Everyone.

Why are board books important for babies and toddlers?

Firstly, board books are durable, which is a boring but crucial point - if you’ve ever been around an 18-month-old you’ll know that they have a vice grip like no other and any paper pages will be history. Board book pages are made of thick cardboard, making them hard to rip but also easy for little hands to turn.

More importantly and wholesomely, these are normally the first books a child is ever exposed to, introducing the concept of books and reading, fostering their early literacy skills. They often have bright, engaging colours and basic concepts, engaging their senses and promoting cognitive development.

The character voices that come out of the grown-up reading the book are often hilarious, and the best books prompt a kind of rhythmic storytelling which can keep children rapt. Due to the nature of reading a book together the child is often close, sitting on the lap perhaps, and it is a bonding time like no other.
