Why are board books important for babies and toddlers?
Firstly, board books are durable, which is a boring but crucial point - if you’ve ever been around an 18-month-old you’ll know that they have a vice grip like no other and any paper pages will be history. Board book pages are made of thick cardboard, making them hard to rip but also easy for little hands to turn.
More importantly and wholesomely, these are normally the first books a child is ever exposed to, introducing the concept of books and reading, fostering their early literacy skills. They often have bright, engaging colours and basic concepts, engaging their senses and promoting cognitive development.
The character voices that come out of the grown-up reading the book are often hilarious, and the best books prompt a kind of rhythmic storytelling which can keep children rapt. Due to the nature of reading a book together the child is often close, sitting on the lap perhaps, and it is a bonding time like no other.
